There are many criticisms of President George W. Bush these days, and I found the one being used most years ago was that he got where he was because of his father, and really had no business being involved in politics. This, of course, is almost completely true. He got where he was because of his father, had no political-based degree, and had only served in the Texas Air National Guard for four years, being treated favorably the whole time. This started fizzling out around the time that others started using their names in order to get involved in politics. Right now, it’s Caroline Kennedy.
In December 2008, Caroline Kennedy announced she had interest in being the next Junior Senator of New York, Hillary Clinton’s seat before becoming nominee for the Secretary of State position. Having no prior experience, Kennedy said she could bring her “celebrity” to the table. With Ted not getting any younger and Caroline being the only surviving child of Former President John F Kennedy, she believes she’s entitled to this position because of her last name. Democrats want another Liberal (especially one as far-left as Kennedy) in the Senate, especially since she is a Kennedy, and women don’t want their representation in the Senate decreased any.
Although many have asked her about getting involved in politics, she barely ever voted since registering in 1988 in New York City, she never supported any Presidential nominee until President-Elect Barrack Obama, and never showed any interest in holding public office until just last month. Not to mention, her qualifications include co-writing two books and doing some charity work, which, as far as her media coverage is concerned, is still more of a qualification than ‘not having an abortion.’
Which brings me to my next point; even though Palin was much more qualified than Kennedy, she still got much harder press. Of course, Kennedy is only running for Senator, not Vice President, but it wasn’t Palin’s election, and unless McCain, who was in fine health according to his doctors, died, she had little responsibility. I mean, Cheney has enough time on his hands to shoot people in the face! The only thing I’ve heard about Kennedy since she announced she wanted to be Senator was the fact that she said “You know” 168 times in a 30 minute interview. One qualification I know I’d like out of my Senator is Public Speaking lessons, not an annoying verbal tick. Bringing it back to Palin's unfair treatment, the media compared Kennedy’s “You know” to Palin’s “You betcha,” which, although was overused, wasn’t a stall for time to answer a question, as if anyone got a clear answer out of her, and certainly wasn’t used 5.6 times a minute.
If Caroline Kennedy wants the respect she thinks she deserves, she might want to get some experience first, or some qualifications for the job. She has a law degree, she should put it to good use and actually practice law, for she never has once since getting her degree. I hope she’ll have to learn the hard way that having a famous last name won’t get you everywhere. America already proved this election that names don’t matter at all when running for public office. Barrack Hussein Obama being elected is proof of this.
